Lead by expert yoga instructor, Heather Thomas, this program will provide you with a deeper understanding of yourself through study of the Ethical principles of yoga (Yamas & Niyamas) and how they relate to all aspects of daily life.

What are the Yamas? The Yamas are the first of eight limbs of yoga. They are “aspects of our own true nature” and are divided into 5 ethical principles that include Ahimsa (Compassion & Love for all), Satya (Truthfulness), Asteya (Honesty), Brahmacharya (Moderation), Aparigraha (Generosity). What are the Niyamas? The Niyamas are the second of the eight limbs of yoga and are “practices or observances for daily life”. These include Saucha (Purity), Santosha (Contentment), Tapas (Commitment), Svadhyaya (Self-Study), Ishwara Pranidhana (Recognition of the Divine).

This life-enhancing experience is the perfect compliment to a new or existing physical yoga practice because it takes that feeling of contentment you get while on the mat and brings it into every day experiences. By exploring the Yamas and Niyamas over a sustained period of time we are able to integrate these ethical principles into how we perceive ourselves, those around us as well as the world we live in. Ultimately this study will deepen your understanding of what it means to live an authentic and genuine life in today’s society giving you a wider perceptual lens, increased feelings of contentment and daily joy.

 

Study Group Details:

The study group will take place in form of 2hr monthly gatherings, once a month for ten months. We will meet in person in Fort McMurray and online on the 4th Monday of every month. Study group meetings will be recorded and discussions placed on a private webpage for study group members to access at any time. There will also be an online discussion forum moderated by Heather for members to use between study group meetings.

We will dedicate a whole month to each principle, exploring, thinking and feeling into each how it plays a part in our thoughts, feelings and daily activities. You will be prompted to focus on quotes, questions and activities each week as we move through the program. Our monthly discussions will focus on the insights from the previous month and will provide an introduction to the principle of focus for the next month.

This study group is based on the book by Deborah Adele: “The Yamas & Niyamas – Exploring Yoga’s Ethical Practice” and supplemented by Heather with insightful teachings, stories, physical and meditation practices.
